The third son of Belcher and Nancy (Lamson) Salisbury was born June 11, 1824 at West Randolph, Vermont, in the original Salisbury Mansion on the north side of the river, built by his father Belcher Salisbury in 1812. In 1843 Lucius went to St. Louis where his elder brothers, Philander and Thomas Lamson Salisbury were operating a very successful boot and shoe business. After remaining there about two years, his brothers sent him to Keytesville, Missouri to take charge of their general country store. After two years he and a fellow clerk, William E. Hill bought the business which was known as Salisbury-Hill.
On April 13, 1847 Lucius returned to Vermont and married Harriet.
In 1856 Lucius became sole owner of the business as the Kansas Missouri troubles made it difficult for eastern people to remain in this part of Missouri. His brother and cousin returned to Vermont leaving Lucius sole owner of the business.
Farming looked good so he bought 320 acres eight miles from Keytesville and in 1858 he moved to his farm of 1200 acres. On April 1, 1867 he founded Salisbury on the unending prairie. Adjoining the city he founded, he engaged in farming and stockraising until 1893.
Lucius, in 1893, traded his farm of 1200 acres and received a fine country estate at Kenton, Ohio of 272 acres. He passed away February 3, 1904 and was taken from Ohio to Salisbury where he was buried in the cemetery he gave to the city.
Harriet died December 7, 1908 in Braintree, Vermont and was returned to Salisbury for burial.
